Chronological Order of Shakespeare's Works
The Medieval World Picture - a key to understanding Shakespeare's plays
In the Middle Ages people believed that the basic pattern of God's own creation was mirrored in all aspects of nature or society if harmony prevailed. It was seen as the devil's task to destabilize the harmony God had put into his work. So evil spirits were dedicated to turning everything upside down. Any disharmony in one area was supposed to trigger similar events in other areas.
