Tony Butt lived in small village in north of England in early 19th century. Like most people in village his parents were very poor. poverty was serious problem in those days. It meant that children had to start work at early age. work was more important than school. When Tony was twelve years old he had to work in factory for nine hours day. working conditions in factory were very bad. There was little light, air was full of smoke most of time and noise was terrible. Of course, young Tony wasn’t too happy, but he couldn’t do anything about it. Some of his friends sat in streets and asked for money or food. many of them were arrested by police sooner or later and were put in prison. They were normally taken to prison in Doncaster. Some of them were even sent to Australia. It was quite hard time.
