At first the [hint: our planet] was cold. There was no fire. But then some birds called ‘Thunderbirds’ sent fire to an old tree which was [hint: to be in a place] on an island in a lake where the Weasels [=Wiesel] lived. So the Weasels were the only [hint: Persons who look after something.] of the fire and they did not give it to anyone else. The people could see the fire from far away, but they could not get to the island because the water was so deep.
Then winter arrived and it became so cold that the people had a very hard time. So they invited all their animal friends. “We need fire to keep us warm,” the people said. “You can all swim or fly. Which of you can get us fire?” But the animals were afraid of the Weasels because they ate other animals. No one wanted to go on with this [hint: plan, activity] until Rabbit stood up and said: “I [hint: think that something is true.] that I can [hint: to handle something.- 2cr.] your problem. I can swim and run fast. And I can also dance very well. Every night the Weasels make a big fire and dance around it. I’ll swim over and while they are dancing, I’ll run away with the fire and [hint: bring over] it to you.” Then Rabbit put some substance on his head so that his hair stood up. He waited until it became dark and then he swam over to the island.
When Rabbit arrived, the Weasels were dancing. “Come and dance with us! We know that you’re a good dancer! You needn’t [hint: do exercises] You’ve got enough [hint: This is what you get when you have done something again and again.]!” they said to him. “Yahoo, here I come!” Rabbit shouted and kicked his legs up into the air. “Lead us, Rabbit!” the Weasels asked. While they were dancing, Rabbit suddenly went very close to the fire and the substance in his hair caught fire. The Weasels were [hint: very scared]. With the fire on his head Rabbit ran off. “He has stolen our fire! Catch him!” the Weasels shouted and went after him. But Rabbit was faster and jumped into the water and swam across with the fire still on his head.
The Weasels now called out: “Oh, great Thunderbirds, send us rain so that the fire on Rabbit’s head will go out!” And it rained for many days until the Weasels were sure that there was no fire anywhere but only in their fire-tree. But while it was raining, Rabbit was staying with his friends, the people, in a tepee [=Indianerzelt]. They were sitting around a warm fire and celebrated Rabbit and his [hint: The great thing he had done].
